An armed student was arrested in the parking lot of Astronaut High School during a Jr. Varsity Football game just after 7 PM Thursday evening, October 14, 2021.
Sergeant Shaun Anderson, acting on information received from a phone call to 911 dispatchers that a student may have a handgun, attempted to arrest the juvenile just outside high school property. The student fled from officers toward the football field where a game was in progress and heavily attended by fans.
School Resource Officer (SRO) John Cruz was able to utilize his taser to stop the running suspect near the entrance to the field. A loaded handgun was recovered from the juvenile, who attends Astronaut High School.
"Outstanding work by our Officers”, said Deputy Chief Todd Hutchinson. "This is exactly why our department is so committed to having highly trained SRO's at every school and at football games", added Hutchinson.
There is an ongoing investigation by Detectives to determine the juvenile's intent to enter the area with a loaded firearm.
The 17-year-old juvenile was charged with Possession of a Firearm and two counts of Resisting an Officer.
