The Titusville Police Department has been made aware of messages circulating on social media involving threats to local schools prompting an informational response to citizens.
These recent online posts were quickly disseminated to School Resource Officers, School Officials, Brevard Public Schools Security, and the TPD Criminal Investigations Section.
The preliminary investigation revealed information contained within the initial social media posts were identified as unsubstantiated. Further investigation revealed an occurrence of widespread threats of school shootings posted on a myriad of social media platforms and were also identified as unverified and not credible.
Currently, there are no credible threats to any of our local schools. However, due to the nature of these type of threats, our department investigates every incident with the upmost seriousness and investigates all possible leads, prioritizing Titusville’s student's and school staff’s wellbeing and safety ensuring a secure learning environment.
We strongly urge parents and guardians to speak with their children and encourage them to report these incidents to school officials, law enforcement, or use the Fortify and Speak Out apps instead of reposting on social media, which has been shown to increase confusion and panic.
“We continue to investigate every threat made against our schools, students, and teachers”, said Criminal Investigations Division Sergeant Bryan Nelson. “At the same time, we remain committed to identifying and holding those individuals responsible for making these threats accountable for their actions”, added Nelson.
