FIREFIGHTER EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
(*) A State of Florida EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) certification may be considered in lieu of Paramedic certification for initial employment, however, candidate must secure Paramedic certification and solo-medic status within 3 years of hiring and maintain such certification in good standing throughout remainder of employment. Failure to obtain Paramedic certification within employment timeline will be cause for termination. (Funding for paramedic classes and certification is the ultimate responsibility of the employee.)
- Minimum of 18 years of age
- High school diploma
- Non-smoker and non-user of tobacco products
- State of Florida Minimum Standards of Firefighting Compliance Certificate
- State of Florida Paramedic Certification (*)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification (AHA)
- Basic Trauma Life Support certificate (AHA)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support certificate (AHA)
- Healthcare Provider C.P.R. card (AHA)
- Certificate of Completion: Emergency Vehicle Operators Certificate (EVOC)
- Florida Drivers License, Class D
The testing process is in three parts: an applicant must successfully complete Part I of the firefighter written testing process in order to proceed to Part II which is successful completion of a department physical agility test before proceeding to Part III which is an oral panel interview. Failure of Parts I or II will disqualify the applicant from proceeding in the hiring process.
If an applicant is successful and is offered employment, it is conditional upon successful completion of the following:
- Drug screening test
- Criminal background check
- Driver license check
- Firefighter health physical
