Titusville Fire Department Presents Citizen Award

Citizen Award: Awarded for personal assistance by a civilian in apprehending an arsonist or in extending oneself beyond one’s own safety to provide prompt action to aid people who are in danger.

L-R: Fire Chief Chuck Bogle, Citizen Alison Curtis, Driver-Operator/Paramedic Tiffany Ford

On April 4th, proud parents Howard and Helen McCarthy were within the audience of fire department members as their daughter, Alison Curtis, was presented with a plaque and certificate of recognition from Fire Chief Chuck Bogle.

Chief Bogle stated, "We are here today to recognize the service that Alison provided at the scene of a vehicle crash.  On March 22 of last year, a van struck another vehicle and then careened into a house.  Titusville community member Alison Curtis, who is also a firefighter/paramedic with the Maitland Fire Department, came upon the crash scene moments after it had occurred.  The driver of the vehicle who had been struck was outside of her vehicle on the ground.  Without hesitation, Alison evaluated the first victim and determined her injuries were not life threatening.  She then approached the van whose occupant had sustained serious injuries and began assessing his physical condition.  Her willingness to provide prompt action is the foundation of this award."

Titusville Driver-Operator/Paramedic Tiffany Ford, who had responded with her crew to the accident scene and who nominated Ms. Curtis for the award, noted that when she approached the van upon arrival on the scene, Alison immediately identified herself, provided me with a very thorough initial patient medical assessment.  "Her calm demeanor and professionalism in identifying herself and her credentials coupled with the thoroughness of her initial patient assessment provided me with vital information that I was able to utilize immediately to call for a trauma and helicopter transport alert and initiate rapid extrication and treatment for this severely injured patient.  Alison offered all assistance in patient care and was an incredible help.  I believe her actions were a heroic effort and her willingness and her presence and actions on the scene accelerated critical emergency medical care for these patients."

Firefighter/Paramedic Alison Curtis thanked Chief Bogle and the department, stating she appreciated their recognition of her actions.  She also said that although she and DO/Paramedic Ford had never met before this day, she wanted to thank her because she was instrumental in Alison's decision to become a firefighter.  "I entered emergency medical training later than most and had only planned to secure certification in that area--becoming certified in firefighting had never entered my mind.  But, there was a young girl in my emergency medical class who was a student intern with the Titusville Fire Department who kept telling me how terrific her mentor firefighter, "Tiffany", was.  My young friend told me about how "Tiffany" had become both a firefighter and a paramedic and kept urging me to do it too.  I did stop and think about and decided I could do it, too.  So, in a way, you could say that DO/Paramedic Tiffany Ford is one of the reasons I'm a firefighter today!"
