Employee of the Month-2007
|
January 2007
Administrative Assistant Kathy Mosley
Kathy was selected for her dedicated work habits and overall assistance to those she comes in contact with. Her dedicated approach was put to the test with the long-term vacancies in the positions of Fire Marshal and Support Services Chief. She stepped in and assisted the fire chief in key areas including finalization, submittal and delivery of the department's budget and other projects, while continuing to maintain her own responsibilities. |

February 2007
Driver-Operator/Paramedic Geoff Armstrong
Geoff was nominated by one of his peers for his superb negotiating skills. Without being prompted, he interceded on the department's behalf with a uniform company when an order placed with their vendor had been printed in error and discussions to resolve the conflict were at an impasse. He was able to ensure that the vendor reprocessed the order at no additional cost to the department. |

March 2007
Clerical Assistant/Volunteer Coordinator LaWanda Park
LaWanda was nominated by one of her peers for her completion of a number of large scale projects since the beginning of the year. These included gathering the annual department statistics, compiling the annual training report and working with Dispatching to monitor accuracy of station data entries. She was also of great assistance for the department's annual driver-operator and lieutenant promotional process. |

April 2007
Fire Inspector Justin Chase
Justin was selected for his tenacity in ensuring that projects meet the fire code requirements. Justin assumed some of the duties of Fire Marshal while the position remained vacant. During this time, he discovered engineering calculations and underground water lines being installed, the plans for which had been reviewed by two certified private engineers, that were incorrect. Had this not been discovered and corrected, it would have resulted in a drastically insufficient water capacity on a major commercial project for firefighting purposes. |

May 2007
Driver-Operator Roland Carpentier, Driver-Operator/Paramedic Jeff Harris, Firefighter/Paramedic Lucas Senger, Driver-Operator/Paramedic Bridget Kozielski, Firefighter/Paramedic Jeremy House, Lieutenant Bill Feagan
These employees were selected for their actions in responding to a building collapse and rescuing a trapped victim. Upon their arrival on scene, it was determined that a fairly large storage building's center trusses had collapsed, trapping one victim under the debris. Both of the connecting exterior walls on the north and south sides of the building had not yet been stabilized and were leaning inward, causing an unsafe situation with the potential of wall collapses on the trapped victim and any rescuers. Regardless of the danger, the crews went in and assisted in cutting the trusses off the victim. They then stabilized the patient and removed him from the site. Although the victim suffered serious injuries from this incident, their quick actions and teamwork were instrumental in stabilizing the patient, removing him from an escalating situation of harm and securing trauma transport to seek advanced treatment at a trauma center. |

(L to R): Driver-Operator Roland Carpentier, Driver-Operator/Paramedic Jeff Harris, Firefighter/Paramedic Lucas Senger, [Interim Fire Chief Scott Gaenicke], Driver-Operator/Paramedic Bridget Kozielski, Firefighter/Paramedic Jeremy House, Lieutenant Bill Feagan |

June 2007
Firefighter/Paramedic Chad Lindquist
Chad was selected for his outstanding work as a paramedic. His patient care was heralded as second-to-none by his co-worker and supervisors. The nomination submitted cited Chad as the ultimate example for all other paramedics to follow and learn from because of the way he talked to treated his patients. He was also praised for his ability to make every call go smoothly.

July 2007
Lieutenant Mike Chiles
Lieutenant Chiles was nominated for his outstanding work as a supervisor. He was praised on his ability to make every call go smoothly, because each of his crew members know exactly what they are to do and does it. Lieutenant Chiles goes over every call to see if there was anything that could be improved upon. It was also noted that he goes out of his way to ensure that all members of his crew keep up their paperwork and go the extra mile to help when it is needed. |

August 2007
D-O/Paramedic Alan Colquhoun
Driver-Operator Colquhoun was nominated for his observational skills and his compassionate action when he noted a disabled van on the side of the road, with the driver inside. He took the initiative to turn his fire engine around to see if assistance was required and determined that one of our citizens had run out of gas, had no money and help from a friend was still a couple of hours away. He noted that she was already overheated from waiting during a 90+ degree day and realized that a protracted wait would be detrimental to her health. After proposing it to his crew members, they retrieved an empty gas can from the station, pooled their money and purchased a couple of gallons of gas to enable this community member to make it to her home in Tennis Village.
D/O Colquhoun's actions not only resolved the lady's transportation issue, but prevented a situation that could have resulted in the deterioration of her health and well-being. |

September 2007
Lieutenant Phillip Jones
Lieutenant Jones was nominated by one of his peers for his excellent ideas and hard work. Phil recognized that our department’s cribbing inventory, which is an essential tool used whenever stabilization of a scene is required, was getting very low. He took it upon himself to propose to volunteer to construct the new cribbing for each of the apparatus and secured the materials. Although his crew members also assisted in the assembly, it was Phil's own alert attention to detail that initiated the process to eliminate a future problem and his willingness to personally get involved in resolving the deficiency that was cited in his nomination as employee of the month. |

October 2007
Operations Chief Michael Woodward
Chief Woodward was nominated for this award because of the commitment and follow-up he displayed in securing replacement mattresses for all of the stations. As the mattresses were years old and in poor condition, he recognized the urgent need to maintain the health and comfort of his employees. However, the funds were not readily available, but he continued to scour budgetary line items and balances to identify and obtain a viable funding source for these purchases without supplanting other need operational equipment. He prepared the necessary reports to secure approval for purchase and he stayed on top of the purchasing process through to project completion. |

November 2007
Driver-Operator Paramedic Tiffany Ford
DO/PM Ford was nominated by one of her coworkers for the outstanding job she did as our M.D.A. Coordinator for this year’s Fill the Boot Drive. Managing and coordinating the myriad of details and collection sites, much less securing personnel to staff them and fighting inclement weather, is very time consuming and is often frustrating. Not only did she persevere and get it done, through her efforts our team members far outpaced last year’s collection amount, donating $7,019.05 in the fight against muscular dystrophy. Her nomination was well deserved! |

December 2007
Volunteer Coord./Clerical Assistant II LaWanda Park
The county-wide EMS Subcommittee was in a terrible bind with reference to our regional protocols. The current edition had previously fallen under multiple stewards and therefore was in a formatting mess. The deadline for implementation of the protocols was nearing and no one particular person was able to undertake, much less provide, the needed time and expertise it would take to accomplish the needs of the committee. I received permission from the Committee to take over the project with the assistance of Lawanda. This required a complete overhaul of the 250+ page document, which included everything from re-formatting to chart layout and indexing, not to mention tons of typing and print review. Each step of the way it seemed a hidden gremlin from previous formatting undid all of the previous day’s work. Not to be outdone, Lawanda was able to overcome each glitch without herself unraveling at the seams.
The final product was delivered in a timely fashion, free of the numerous problems the document once contained. We now have a legal document that has been cleaned, corrected and placed into service which could not have been accomplished without Lawanda’s assistance, and a hearty thank you has been voiced by all of the departments from within Brevard County. |
