Governor Declares Florida Birding & Wildlife Watching and Natural Resource Education Week
VIERA, Fla. – In recognition of the Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival, Florida Governor Charlie Crist has declared January 25-31 as Florida Birding & Wildlife Watching and National Resource Education Week.
The proclamation includes statistics that show over 48 million people nationwide participate in bird and wildlife watching, while wildlife viewing generates more than $3 billion in Florida, and Florida is second in the nation in this business, with more than 19,000 jobs in retail sales.
Visit Florida statistics show that over 60 million visitors made Florida their destination in 2009 with Tourism Recreational taxable sales of over $50 billion. The abundant natural resources of Florida have made the state a destination for outdoor enthusiasts who watch birds and wildlife via hiking, kayaking and biking.
Florida has the greatest number of bird species in the eastern U.S. and nearly 500 Great Florida Birding Trail locations across the state for birders to explore. Florida offers more than 30 festivals to out-of-state visitors as well as in-state residents.
The Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival, now in its 13th year, is the largest such festival in Florida and one of the largest in the United States. It is underway from January 27 to February 1 with activities in multiple locations along the Space Coast.
