Titusville Police hosted an annual “Kicks for Guns” event on Thursday August 11th 2016 which got a total of 71 guns off the street -including 3 illegal short barrel shotguns.
“Kicks for Guns” is a twelve-hour amnesty event in which citizens can turn in guns in any condition and under any circumstance anonymously with no questions asked. In exchange for the relinquishment of the firearm at this event, they received a $50 gift card to Wal-Mart or Target.
This year’s event was held in the Wild Ocean Market Parking lot, at South Park Avenue and South Street. “Monsters in the Morning” on Real Radio 104.1 and Central Florida CRIMELINE promoted multiple “Kicks for Guns” events occurring at the same time across Central Florida.
Titusville Police were supported with food and drinks by vendors including; Bimbo Bakeries, Valentino’s on Garden Street, McDonalds on Garden Street, Wild Ocean Market, and Firehouse Subs of Rockledge.
“This event is a chance for us to get unwanted and illegal guns off the street”, said Lieutenant Josh Little, who oversaw Titusville’s participation this year.
Along with donations from area businesses, Titusville Police used forfeiture funds to help fund this program. The guns taken in at these events are destroyed.
