The City of Titusville, Florida / NewsTitusville Community Service Award
Each year, the Titusville Community Service Award is presented to an individual who has done exemplary works in the community. On June 14th, Lorna Kesner was named the 2015 recipient at an awards ceremony held at the Titusville Elks Lodge in conjunction with the annual Flag Day Celebration.
Lorna Kesner has been a resident and active member of the Titusville community for over 28 years. She is the Assistant Principal at Apollo Elementary School and has served as the Volunteer Coordinator and Business Partner Coordinator for the school for the past 11 years. Much of her volunteer efforts in and out of the school environment focus on helping students and families in need. For example, Ms. Kesner has been instrumental in partnering with the Hunger Project to provide food to needy children for weekends. In 2014, she coordinated with the Presbyterian Church, North Brevard Charities, and the Feed the Families program to provide over 50 families with a turkey dinner during the holiday season. She has also facilitated the “Shop with a Cop” program to provide gifts for some under-privileged children at Apollo Elementary during the holidays.
In addition, Lorna Kesner is actively involved in promoting community activities. She has assisted in procuring guest speakers and recruiting volunteers for the annual Veteran’s Day Program at Apollo Elementary. Ms. Kesner brought the “Adopt a Soldier” program to the school whereby holiday gifts were collected through donations made by the students and the Titusville community to send overseas to an adopted soldier and his entire unit. To continue, she has worked to facilitate a community partnership between the YMCA and Apollo Elementary to educate children on proper nutrition and fitness. Furthermore, Ms. Kesner devotes her time and efforts to other activities in the community such as the annual La Cita Christmas on the Green.
Upon acceptance of this award, Ms. Kesner stated, “The true heroes at Apollo Elementary are my colleagues, the Business Partners, and other Titusville community members who have made major contributions to make a difference in the lives of the children at Apollo Elementary.”
The Community Service Award was established in memory of Reverend Harry R. Lee who served the City and community in many different capacities. Through his words & actions, he set an example for encouraging service and unity. Annually, nominations for the award are solicited from area schools, churches, and civic organizations as well as from the community at large. Those nominated are recognized at the award ceremony and each receive a framed certificate. This year's nominees in addition to Lorna Kesner were Janet Cathy, Neta Harris, Juanita Houston, Dwayne Hutcheson, Richard Lord, Barbara McGillicuddy, and Lily Renzetti.
