Don't Drown in Doubt - Flooding Can Happen Here

Everyone is vulnerable to the effects of flooding.  Generally, where you are determines the type of flooding you may experience.  Mountain regions, regions with higher elevations and those with deep canyons and gorges may experience more flash flooding; those regions that are more coastal may experience flooding due to excessive rainfall from tropical storms and hurricanes.  Regardless of how flooding occurs, everyone needs to take its threat seriously.  Although we often think of flooding in monetary terms of damage to structures, it can also lead to drowning deaths.  On average, 140 persons die each year in the United States from flooding.  It can move houses off foundations, float heavy equipment down its streams and sweep people away within its path.  If a roadway is flooded, turn around.  Don't attempt to cross the flooded area either on foot or by vehicle.   Evacuate if officials warn of flooding and/or storm surges.  The threats are too heartbreaking to ignore.

Securing flood insurance to repair your home or business affected by flooding is a smart investment.  Most typical homeowners and business insurance policies don't cover flooding.  But, you need to do it soon.  Most policies have to be in effect for at least 45-90 days before claims from flooding experienced can be sought.
