|Funded by our community partner, Parrish Medical Center, Titusville Fire and Emergency Services has launched a new emergency service capability within our community--SERV.
SERV stands for Special Emergency Response Vehicle and this specialized vehicle is a modified electric unit capable and small enough to traverse bike paths, hiking trails and grassy park areas to reach and transport patients. Typical fire engines and transport vehicles are restricted to stabilized driving areas and are not capable of going off-road.
It became evident that such an off-road capability was vital shortly after the opening of Titusville's recent hiking trail in the south end of our city. A hiker on the trail suffered a medical emergency and responding fire/medical crews found it challenging to overcome obstacles in reaching and transporting this patient. Discussions between our emergency responders and our community care partner, Parrish Medical Center, resulted in developing the SERV concept.
Although the unit will be housed at Station #13 on Barna Avenue, it will also be used at scheduled events throughout the city, such as the Indian River Festival and space launches, and whenever large crowds or park interiors inhibit the use of regular response vehicles.
