Over the three-day period preceding Labor Day, members of the Titusville Fire and Emergency Services Department will be displaying their "boots" to community members for donations in support of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.  "Since 1954, the fire service has been an integral partner in seeking support for MDA research and programs.  The breakthroughs in the last decade in the areas of research, treatment and equipment used to support the victims of muscular dystrophy were possible only through the generosity and compassion of local communities like Titusville", said Titusville Fire Department's M.D.A. Coordinator, Driver-Operator/Paramedic Tiffany Ford.  "Our goal this year is to raise at least $6,000.  That equates to 1 hour, 10 minutes of research at the University of Florida or 9 children to MDA Summer Camp in Sorrento, Florida or 30 clinic visits to Nemours Children's Clinic or Lucerne Rehabilitation Clinic for initial diagnositic work or assistance with the purchase of 3 wheelchairs, leg braces or communication devices or assitance to 12 individuals for repairs of their wheelchairs or leg braces per year."

Founded in 1950, the Muscular Dystrophy Association is a voluntary health agency working to defeat neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services, and far-reaching professional and public health education.  More than 1 million Americans are affeted by neuromuscular diseases and about 250,000 have some form of muscular dystrophy.  Included in the more than 40 neuromuscular diseases covered by MD are nine forms of muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral scleriosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's diease), spinal muscular atrophy and others.  The Muscular Dystrophy Association is funded almost entirely by individual, private voluntary contributions.  It seeks no fees from those it serves and dedicates 77 cents of every dollar it spends directly on program services.  M.D.A. was the first nonprofit agency to be recognized by the American Medical Association with a Lifetime Achievement Award for significant and lasting contributions to the health and welfare of humanity.

Titusville Fire and Emergency Services urges any potential contributors to view M.D.A.'s website and annual report for more detailed information.
