Titusville Police K9s Achieve Rare Success

2016

The Titusville Police Department’s K9 Unit has attained a rare achievement by successfully obtaining both national, North American Police Work Dog Association (NAPWDA) and state, Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) certifications for their Dual-Purpose police canines for the third straight year!

Over the last week the K9 Unit, consisting of Officer Mark Jennings and K9 “Lex”, Officer Jesse Lengefeld and K9 “Draco”, and Officer John Cantalupo and K9 “Jack”, spent long arduous hours certifying in front of national and state officials which resulted in successfully passing their NAPWDA and FDLE certifications.

Titusville’s Dual-Purpose police canines are certified for narcotics detection, as well as certified for patrol, such as criminal apprehension, handler protection, area search, building search and tracking.

“For the past three years these individuals have completed an accomplishment that few teams have accomplished”, said Titusville Police K9 Unit Supervisor, Lieutenant Chris DeLoach. “These officers spend hundreds of hours a year training with their canines to accomplish this and the hard work is evident”, added DeLoach.

The myriad of skills by our highly trained K9 unit are an invaluable resource for crime prevention and crime solving. These officers and canines are integral part of maintaining the safety of the community of Titusville.
